The Fraunhofer Project Center for Smart Manufacturing at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (hereinafter referred to as “The Project Center”) is the 10th Fraunhofer Project Center approved by Fraunhofer Society within the global range and the first Project Center within China. It is also the first cooperative research organization of Fraunhofer Society in China. 

On March 26th, 2019, Shanghai Jiao Tong University concluded the official contract with Fraunhofer Society and Shanghai Lin-gang Special Area Development and Construction Management Commission for the establishment of the Fraunhofer Project Center for Smart Manufacturing at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This marked the official completion of preparation phase and the establishment of the first cooperative research organization of Fraunhofer in China.

This cooperation is a megamerger between the high-level research institute as German Industry 4.0 and Chinese Smart Manufacturing, opening up a new mode for the international top non-profits research institute to enter China for in-depth cooperation and would mark a milestone for Shanghai to build itself into a smart manufacturing and innovative center with global influence.

Website Statement: As for the current legal existence of Fraunhofer in China, except for Fraunhofer Representative Office Beijing , Fraunhofer Project Center for Smart Manufacturing at Shanghai Jiao Tong University is the sole affiliated research organizaiton of Fraunhofer, there is no other Fraunhofer branch in China. Q: What is Fraunhofer Project Center for Smart Manufacturing at Shanghai Jiao Tong University?

A: The research mode of Fraunhofer in Germany is to establish research institutes in cooperation with German universities. Since its establishment, Fraunhofer has established 75 research institutes with many well-known German universities such as RWTH Aachen University, University of Stuttgart and Technical University of Munich. The first cooperative research organization of Fraunhofer in China is Fraunhofer Project Center for Smart Manufacturing at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. 

Q: What is the difference between the Project Center and Fraunhofer's local research institutes? 

A: The legal person of Fraunhofer’s local institutes belongs to Fraunhofer itself. As our Project Center is an oversea cooperation base of Fraunhofer, its legal person is affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University. 

Q: How to cooperate with our Project Center?

A: We welcome enterprises to cooperate with our Project Center to conduct R&D projects. The main body of legal person of the contract with the Project Center is Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In the contract, it will be noted that the Project Center will implement the cooperation project. At the same time, the Project Center welcomes enterprises, institutions, and industrial bases to become alliance enterprises of the Project Center. Our Project Center will provide technical support to the enterprises.
